Best Time to Take an Alaska Cruise: Month-by-Month Guide

Alaska is one of those places that doesn’t do “ordinary.”

Glaciers, whales, misty fjords, snow-capped mountains, tiny port towns, long summer days… it all feels a little wild in the best way. But choosing when to cruise Alaska matters.

The best month depends on what you care about most: wildlife, weather, price, crowds, or scenery.

May: Best for Lower Prices & Snowy Scenery

May is the beginning of Alaska cruise season. It’s cooler, quieter, and often one of the more budget-friendly times to go.

You’ll usually see snow still sitting heavy on the mountains, fewer crowds in port, and crisp spring air. It’s a great choice if you want Alaska to feel peaceful and untouched.

Best for: lower prices, fewer crowds, snowy mountain views.

June: Best for Long Days & Balanced Weather

June brings those famous long Alaska days. You get more daylight for sightseeing, excursions, wildlife watching, and standing on deck with coffee while the mountains roll by.

The landscape starts turning green, waterfalls are flowing, and wildlife activity is strong.

Best for: first-time Alaska cruisers, families, active excursions, long daylight hours.

July: Best for Wildlife & Warmest Weather

July is peak Alaska cruise season for a reason. It usually brings the warmest weather, strong wildlife viewing, and plenty of energy in the ports.

This is a great month for bear viewing, salmon runs, and travelers who want the classic summer Alaska experience. The trade-off? Higher prices and busier ships/ports.

Best for: wildlife lovers, bear viewing, salmon runs, warmest temps.

August: Best for Whales & Moody Alaska Beauty

August has a softer, moodier feel. You may see more rain, but that misty weather is part of what makes Alaska feel so dramatic.

Whale activity is often excellent, berries are ripening, and late August can start to feel a little quieter as summer travel begins to slow down.

Best for: whale watching, photographers, moody scenery, late-summer travel.

September: Best for Deals & Fall Color

September is the end of cruise season. It’s cooler and wetter, but it can also be beautiful. Think golden hillsides, quieter ports, lower pricing, and possibly darker skies at night.

Northern Lights are never guaranteed, but September gives you a better chance than the middle of summer.

Best for: lower prices, fall colors, fewer crowds, possible aurora.

Quick Alaska Cruise Month Comparison

Month Best For Things to Know
May Value, snow-capped mountains, fewer crowds Cooler weather
June Long days, balanced weather, first-timers Prices start climbing
July Wildlife, warmest weather, peak Alaska energy Busiest and often priciest
August Whales, misty scenery, late summer More rain possible
September Deals, fall color, quieter ports Cooler and wetter

So… When Should You Go?

There isn’t one perfect month for everyone.

For the best overall first-time Alaska cruise experience, I usually love June or July.

For lower prices and fewer crowds, look at May or September.

For whales and dramatic scenery, August can be incredible.

The real magic is matching the month, ship, itinerary, and excursions to the way you actually like to travel.
